New this year to the Waldoboro Day 5K is our team competition where you round up a couple of your friends (or enemies) and compete as a team, in addition to competing as yourself. The logistics of it are pretty simple and modeled after cross-country scoring.
In traditional cross-country scoring, your placement of your first 4 runners counts toward your score. Like so...
Team A runners: 1st, 3rd, 6th, 10th = 20 points
Team B runners: 2nd, 4th, 5th, 11th= 22 points
Team A wins with the lower score. But here's our twist: for every additional runner, we'll knock 1 point off your score. So...if Team A has 4 runners and Team B has 7 runners, Team B will get 19 points (22-3) and they'll win. The idea here is to encourage you to recruit more people. We'll break a tie by the placement of the 4th runner.
Now that's all well and good, but what can you win? We're glad you asked.
The winner of the team competition (provided they're over 21) will get a private tour and tasting at Waldoboro's newest brewery, Odd Alewives Farm Brewery!
Sarah and John McNeil have taken the old alpaca farm across the street from Moody's Cabins (and at the top of a brutal training hill) and turned it into something truly special: a brewery and tasting room that Waldoboro can be proud of. There was a soft opening last week and several Waldoboro runners have already checked it out and experimented with different beers as recovery drinks (they all worked).
They currently have 4 beers on tap with more to come very, very soon.
Odd Alewives' tasting room is currently open from 4pm-9pm on Thursdays and Fridays and from noon until 9pm on Saturdays and from noon to 6pm on Sundays. Check the hours online, as they should change. You should go. You could also stop there after a hard hill workout in preparation for the race. You won't be the only one. But if you go the night before the race, maybe take it easy?
But don't forget to round up a team. The race will be here before you know it and you'll definitely want to win the private tour and see how the beer is made.
